Merge or unmerge a planned workout and a completed activity
Combine a synced activity with its planned workout when they show as two separate blocks, or separate an activity that was matched to the wrong workout.
When an athlete's completed activity isn't matched with the planned workout, the calendar shows two separate blocks on the same day: the planned workout and the completed activity. Use Merge to combine them into one block, whether or not the athlete started the planned workout on the watch. If an activity was linked to the wrong workout, use Unmerge to separate them again.
Merge a completed activity with a planned workout
- Open the athlete's calendar in the web app.
- Hover over the completed activity and click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the block. You can also right-click the block.
- Click Merge.
- The Workout Merge window shows the completed activity at the top and the planned workouts of the same sport for that day below it. Click Merge next to the planned workout you want to link.
The two blocks become one: the planned workout, now with the athlete's completed data and the compliance color that shows how closely the session followed the plan.
Merge doesn't appear?
The Merge option only appears on completed activities synced from a device or app that aren't merged yet, and only when the same day has a planned workout of the same sport. Check these cases:
- The activity has a different sport. If the watch sent the session under another sport, the completed block shows that sport's icon, for example the grey stopwatch of Other next to a planned Rowing workout. Only workouts of the same sport can be merged. As the coach, open the completed activity (click the block or choose Edit in its menu), pick the planned workout's sport with the icon next to Title, and click Update. Merge then appears in the block's menu.
- Change the activity, not the planned workout. Changing a workout's sport clears its steps, so the planned workout would lose its structure.
- The session was on another day. Drag the planned workout to the day of the activity first.
- The block is already merged. Its menu shows Unmerge instead.
Unmerge an activity from the wrong workout
- Open the menu of the merged block (three dots or right-click).
- Click Unmerge.
- Confirm the message "Are you sure you want to unmerge this workout? This will separate the planned and completed workout."
The planned workout and the completed activity show up as separate blocks again. You can now merge the activity with the right workout.
Why didn't the activity merge automatically?
When an activity syncs from Garmin, COROS, Polar, Suunto, Wahoo, Strava or Apple Watch, TrainerPlan merges it with a planned workout that:
- is on the same day,
- is for the same sport,
- has a duration or a distance, and
- isn't already merged with another activity.
If TrainerPlan doesn't recognize the sport the device sends, the activity is imported as Other and won't match a planned workout of a specific sport. If more than one planned workout qualifies, TrainerPlan picks the one closest in duration or distance to what the athlete did, so two similar sessions on the same day can end up swapped. If none qualifies, the activity stays in its own block and you can merge it by hand.
Good to know
- Who can do it: coaches, from the athlete's calendar or a group calendar, and athletes, from their own calendar.
- Web only: Merge and Unmerge are available in the web app on a computer, not in the mobile app.
- FIT file uploads: an activity imported from a FIT file merges automatically when the athlete has exactly one planned workout of the same sport on that day.
- Watch and Strava both connected: the same session can sync twice. The first copy merges with the planned workout and the second one shows up as a separate block.
