Connect ChatGPT, Claude or your own tools (API and MCP)

With Premium you can connect an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude, or your own scripts, to your TrainerPlan data through the API and our MCP server.

The TrainerPlan API lets your own tools use your training data: an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude through our MCP server, a script or a spreadsheet. They can read your calendar, completed workouts, zones and fitness and, if you allow it, plan your own workouts, notes and events. It is included in Premium.

You set it up on the web app.

What your tools can do

  • Read your calendar (planned and completed workouts, with their steps), events, notes, comments, training zones, fitness, fatigue and form, and your workout library.
  • Make changes, only if you allow it: add, edit and delete your own workouts, notes and events.

What your coach planned stays as it is: your tools can't change it. Your coach is told about what you add, as when you add it in the app.

Connect ChatGPT or Claude

Assistants that support MCP (Model Context Protocol), such as ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or VS Code, connect to TrainerPlan directly. The server address is shown on your API / MCP page:

https://api.trainerplan.co/api/v1/mcp

  1. In ChatGPT or Claude, add a custom connector with that address.
  2. The assistant opens TrainerPlan. Sign in if you are asked to.
  3. On Connect … to TrainerPlan, tick Also allow it to make changes only if you want the assistant to plan for you.
  4. Select Allow.

Then ask in plain words, for example "How did my training go this month?". The app appears in your list of keys as Connected app, and you can disconnect it there with Revoke.

Create an API key

Scripts, spreadsheets and tools that send a key instead of signing in need an API key.

  1. Open My Profile from the menu at the top right and select API / MCP in the left menu.
  2. Select Create key.
  3. Give the key a Name that says what will use it.
  4. Choose an Expiry if you want the key to stop working by itself: 30 days, 90 days or 1 year. The default is No expiry.
  5. Tick Allow this key to make changes (add, edit and delete your own workouts, notes and events) only if the tool needs it. Without it, the key can only read.
  6. Enter your Current password. The first time, accept the API terms.
  7. Select Create key, then Copy. The key is shown only once, so keep it somewhere safe.

Send the key in the Authorization header: Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY. Every address starts with https://api.trainerplan.co/api/v1. The full list of requests is in API documentation, linked on the API / MCP page, and How to connect it explains the MCP options.

The API / MCP page

If you have Basic

The API / MCP page shows The TrainerPlan API and MCP server are included in the Premium plan and an Upgrade Plan button. An assistant that tries to connect is told that connecting apps is included in Premium. See Upgrade to Premium, manage or cancel your plan.

Good to know

  • A key reaches all your training data, so treat it like a password. Use a separate key for each tool. You can have up to 10 keys, and Revoke one at any time without affecting the others.
  • Each key can make 120 requests a minute, of which 30 can be changes. Usage in the last 30 days shows what each key did.
  • Changes made through the API are the same as changes made in the app: a planned workout goes to your connected devices.
  • The API is not included in the 14-day free trial. It works with Premium you pay for, or Premium your coach pays for.
  • If a Premium payment fails and stays unpaid for more than 3 days, your keys stop working until it is paid. You can still revoke keys after you leave Premium.
  • Coaches: see How to use the TrainerPlan API.
