Send planned workouts to your Garmin watch

Sync your TrainerPlan workouts, including structured intervals, to the Garmin Connect calendar and your watch, automatically or with Upload workouts.

TrainerPlan can send your planned workouts to your Garmin Connect calendar, so they appear on your Garmin watch ready to start. Structured workouts with several steps, such as a 15' warm-up + 6 x 1000 m with 2' recovery + a 10' cool-down, arrive step by step with their targets, and the watch guides you through each one. Use it to sync your training plan to Garmin instead of copying workouts by hand.

Before you start

Your Garmin account must be connected to TrainerPlan. If it isn't yet, follow the Connect with Garmin article. When Garmin asks what TrainerPlan can access, leave all the permissions switched on, or workouts can't be sent.

Turn on workout sync

  1. On the TrainerPlan website, open Connect device in the menu. You can also get there from your profile, under Connections.
  2. On the Garmin card, switch on Synchronize Trainerplan workouts with Garmin Calendar.
  3. Sync your watch with the Garmin Connect app. Your planned workouts show up in the Garmin Connect calendar and on the watch.

Coaches can check the same setting for an athlete: open the athlete's profile and go to Connections.

What is sent, and when

  • Today and the next 4 days. Workouts planned in this window are sent automatically. TrainerPlan checks every day, so new days are added as they come into the window.
  • New and edited workouts. When your coach adds or changes a workout inside the window, the change is sent to Garmin.
  • Deleted or moved workouts. Deleting a workout removes it from your Garmin calendar. Moving it to a day outside the window removes it too, and it is sent again once that day comes into the window.
  • Plans, groups and events. Workouts from training plans and groups are included, and so are events on your calendar, such as races.
  • Sports and targets. Running, cycling and swimming workouts arrive on Garmin as that sport, and swims include the workout's pool length. Pace or speed, heart-rate, power and cadence targets are sent as ranges. Zone targets are turned into your own values using the zones set up in TrainerPlan.

Send workouts right away

To send workouts without waiting, click Upload workouts on the Garmin card and confirm. TrainerPlan sends the workouts for today and the next 4 days straight away. Then sync your watch with the Garmin Connect app.

Good to know

  • Strength training workouts are not sent to Garmin.
  • Only planned workouts are sent. Completed workouts, and workouts already linked to an activity from a device, are skipped.
  • If your coach limits how many weeks of training you can see, only the workouts you can see are sent.
  • Switching off Synchronize Trainerplan workouts with Garmin Calendar stops new workouts and changes from being sent. Upload workouts only works while the switch is on.
  • Is Upload workouts greyed out even though the switch is on? Look for a red message about a missing Garmin permission on the card. Click Remove to disconnect Garmin, then connect again and leave all the permissions switched on.
